A while ago I bought a digital camera. I’d never had one before, and never been interested. Photography never really bothered me, apart from when I went on holiday, ensuring that I’d come back with two rolls full of shit photos that were relegated to the lowest drawer in the house, never to be seen again. When I got the digital camera, for the first time in my life, I was the one taking my own pictures on my own camera. Even better still, I could instantly see the photo to see if it was worth keeping or not. Usually it was a big fat NOT, but occasionally I got gems like this.

And this.

I’d been bitten by the photography bug, but longed for something a little bit better than my Cybershot that was becoming a bit battered. Sharing it with a girlfriend, festivals, gigs and jumping around in bags does that to it. Said girlfriend has since lost it.
So, I set about looking for a new camera. I’d had my eyes on the Canon 400d for a while, but I couldn’t justify buying it. Like everything, my willpower waned and I bought the 400d.
I hated it. I took it to London, and took some good pictures.

But I hated it. It took a mean picture, but it removed everything from taking pictures that I’d loved with the inferior Cybershot: the portability, the ability to take a picture in an instant, and the fact that it could fit in my pocket. I either had to carry the Canon beast around my neck – prime picking for someone to punch me in the face and snag it quick sharpish – or put it in my bag. Carrying it in my hands everywhere wasn’t any fun, and London was the first and last place I took it.
So I was on the hunt again. I was tempted to just buy a cheap Cybershot again, but I wanted to splash out on something that was as good as the 400d, but much more portable. I found the Powershot G9. And I bought it, and loved it.
That was a year ago, and since then I’ve taken the G9 all over the place. I love the fact that it’s retro looking, it’s built like a tank, it takes better pictures than the 400d, and it can still fit in your pocket. I’ve had some good times with the G9. Like these.

That still isn’t the end of it. I’ve recently gone back to film cameras, and bought in the Fisheye 2. I’ll tell you more about that when I’ve got my first roll developed.
And no, I’m not giving you a satisfying conclusion.
No cat pictures = Burgess fail.
I’m in the same boat. I used to be really into photography about 2 years ago. I used to have a Fujifilm DSLR style camera, took a beautiful photograph but like yourself i never actually wanted to take it around with me.I would take it to track days, photoshoots and the like but i wouldnt take it away aboard with me when you can get some great photographs.
I’m now stuck with an Canon Ixus point and shoot camera. Takes an average picture, nothing else.
