Up until very recently, my blog was essentially just about me forcing what I like upon the reader. I had white text on a dark background (difficult to read for most people), and generally a poor command of my text layout; you know, that stuff you’re coming to this site to read. Ever since I realised this shouldn’t be the case, I’ve been on a quest to make my blog as readable and as easy to use as possible.
Leaving out the occasional blog post image, my actual blog design has 2 images in it, and the rest is CSS. I’ve reduced the amount of images right down to allow people on slow connections to visit my site easily.
Text scales up and down very comfortably, but my next quest for this will be to make sure the character length stays the same when the text size is changed. This is a work in progress.
I’ve opted for the standard link colours and clicking effects, only changing them to make the links inside my blog posts bold so if somebody has impaired vision they can still recognise the links.
The final thing still on my to-do list is to make the white background less harsh on the eyes when reading. I’ve changed the reading text to slightly off-black to make that a bit easier to read, and I am working on solutions for changing the background.
Anyway, that’s why my website is boring-looking. All for you.

shame you couldn’t keep the old posts in the old style to show new readers exactly what you’re on about, althought there’s probably an image somewhere on your site.i like how you’re trying to be user friendly. hope the new job is going okay, you’re supposed to be keeping me updated!!!1

Obviously the new job isn’t keeping you THAT busy seen as you’ve all this time to think about/mess around with the site!
Congrats though, how about some links to your previous works?

Kim – I’m still get used to the new schedule! I will keep you updated, when I get around to finding my feet.
Rob – if you’ve noticed I wrote this blog late at night: when I wasn’t at work. As sad as it seems, this is what I do in my spare time…
James – Haha. It does look a bit boring doesn’t it? It is a work in progress, and I’m thinking about some improvements I can make to it still. I’m contemplating just getting rid of the sidebar, or maybe making it more useful to people. If you’ve got any ideas, pop a suggestion in here.

not really a suggestion, more like a query, what exactly is your search bar up there for? to search your site? to search the web?? what? coz to be quite honest i’d be happy searching an archive coz i’d never know which key words to hit in to find what i wanted in the first place.

Kim, the search box is to search the website. Many people use them on websites, and I know I do, so it’s staying. I always use them on people’s blogs if I’m searching for something particular. Never know when it might be useful.
