It says Eagles of Death Metal in sign language. Presumably.
There’s not enough fresh music out there. Big companies dominate the music industry, and these are littered with ‘safe bets’ on their rosters: albums they know will sell a lot of copies, and at least guarantee to keep all those pointless record company people in jobs for a few more months. Queens of the Stone Age consistently reinvent themselves, and I’m glad of it. This at least gives me a good album to buy every year or so. The rest comes out, and it’s the same old shit that it always was.
So thank god then for Eagles of Death Metal with their Peace Love Death Metal album. Comprising of Josh Homme on drums of Queens of the Stone Age fame, there is some very familiar drum beats in there, but this is one of the most refreshing and catchy albums I’ve listened to for years.
It all comes down to risking something on an unsure bet. Because EODM are a side project, it’s clear that Peace Love Death Metal is very experimental, but all the better for it. Each song sounds like a new personality; you can tell it’s EODM, but it’s completely different. It’s fantastically refreshing to listen to something that’s new, different, but catchy at the same time.
Peace Love Death Metal is absolutely rammed full of hit singles. Each song is just as infectious as the last, but with a different twist. This is definitely more pop rock than anything QOTSTA ever did, but this is a different band. This is feel good music for any occasion at it’s very best.
If you even have a passing love of some of QOTSTA’s older stuff, and a slight interest in Kyuss and other stoner-rock bands, then you will absolutely adore this.
It’s unlikely that Peace Love Death Metal will sell by the bucket load, or become a top 40 album (definitely not in the UK at least). This is a bunch of blokes who love what they do, and love making songs that other people will love.
Lucky for us, they decided to release it as an album and call themselves a ridiculous name.
// Too good to give it a score out of 10. (No, it’s not death metal.)
