When I first tried to Jailbreak my iPod, I found it difficult to find the best method to do it, so here I’ll share my experiences with Jailbreaking my iPod on a Mac, and what I consider to be the fastest method for doing so.
Step 1: Downgrade your iPod Touch firmware to 1.1.1
Go to settings > general > about and see what firmware you are running. If it says anything other than 1.1.1 next to version, you need to downgrade your Touch.
- Download the 1.1.1 firmware.
- Plug in your iPod Touch, and open up iTunes. You’re going to need to restore your iPod.
- Make sure you can see your iPod on the left hand side in iTunes. Hold the power button and menu button until you see your iPod Touch disappear from iTunes.
- When your iPod has disappeared from iTunes, release the power button BUT keep hold of the menu button until you see your iPod appear again.
- iTunes will now tell you that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode and must be restored. Click OK.
- Option-click the restore button. When the finder window appears, locate your .ipsw file. This will start your firmware restoration. When it’s done, you should be running the 1.1.1 firmware.
Step 2: Jailbreak your iPod Touch
- Visit www.jailbreakme.com on your iPod Touch.
- Click the very last link – Install AppSnappp.
- Follow the instructions. By the time you’re finished you should have a Jailbroken iPod Touch.
Fixing the 300MB memory issue
It’s possible that when you try to upload all your music back on to your iPod Touch it will tell you that you only have 300MB of memory left. Don’t worry about it. Nothing has gone wrong. You just need to make a file directory change.
- Launch the new installer program you will now have on your Jailbroken iPod.
- Install MobileFinder.
- Launch Mobile Finder, and press up until you are at the very top directory.
- Open “var” folder.
- Open “root” folder.
- Click “Media” and rename to “Media.hack”.
- Click “Mediaold” and rename to “Media”.
And that’s it. You should be all Jailbroken.
